For iwenty years, ONERA's DEMR and DMPH departments have been studying the phenomenology of lightning and its direct and indi-rect effects on aeronautical vehicles and on civil and military buildings. Experimental studies have brought out and characterized the lightning initiation mechanisms on a vehicle in flight, and have characterized the currents and field radiated in lightning strokes on structures on the group. Numerical methods and tools have been developed to complement these experimental approaches.
