Agri-giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) is "a little disappointed" at the sluggish pace at which ethanol markets are opening up in the Southeast, but company officials expect the pace to quicken over the next two quarters, they said in a conference call. Opening the Southeast market has the potential to create demand for an additional 3 billion gals/yr of ethanol in the region. While a handful of oil majors have made inroads in the Southeast, there are still infrastructure hurdles to overcome. "There is good intent there, but the actions around getting that infrastructure in place have been slower than we thought," said ADM President Patricia Woertz.
