Marathon to offer unblended gasoline at some terminals

Marathon has notified jobbers in Florida that it will sell them a non-ethanol-blended gasoline at two terminals in the state, Tampa and Port Everglades. The refiner says the product will be a 91-octane "recreational gasoline" that will serve a need at marinas, and for operators of small aircraft. "They're being very clever. They've spotted a market niche and they have moved to fill it," says Jim Smith, exec VP with the Florida Petroleum Marketers Assn. Under a recently adopted state law, all gasoline must contain 10% ethanol by January 2010. However, exemptions are allowed for some aircraft and boats.
