ExxonMobil has now officially launched its new co-branded MasterCard, with a promotional offer based on a flat cents/gallon rebate, rather than a percentage of the price. While the switch should substantially reduce ExxonMobil's costs to acquire card business, it is an offer that other refiners can easily replicate and will not differentiate the company's new card from the pack, notes one industry analyst. Chevron and Wawa have adopted similar strategies after seeing summer fuel costs soar to $4/gal or more, leading to much higher rebate payments, as reported (OE 08/04/08).
