They all do, if you believe the letters they send out to retailers on a regular basis. Some talk about card bounties, the value of their total package, or the "execution of their offer." Others say the only thing that counts are the fees. "All the rest is just f- - ting in the wind," says one oil exec. Citing the credit card industry newsletter The Nilson Report, ExxonMobil recently told marketers that it has had the "largest portfolio" in the industry for four years if its no-fee personal, business and fleet card portfolios are combined. Exxon did not distinguish between dormant and active accounts, however. While Nilson showed the company had 7 million personal and business accounts, only 2.6 million of them were active accounts. Shell and Chevron both beat Exxon when it comes to active accounts. Shell had a total 6.21 million accounts, 4.07 million of them active, while Chevron listed 5.6 million accounts, 2.8 million of them active.
