MasterCard increases fees

MasterCard says it is raising its "Assessment Fee," effective April 16, 2010. The fee will go from 0.095% to 0.110%. It is charged based on gross dollar volume of retail sales. MasterCard says it is the first time that it has changed the fee since 1996. The new fee will go straight to MasterCard and not to the banks, says an official with the National Assn. of Convenience Stores. MasterCard raisedrnother fees - its "Network Access" and "Branding Fee" - by 250% in July. Visa is expected to make a similar announcement within the next 60 days.
