The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Sept. 7 that it would waive the sulfur specifications for diesel-powered marine vessels as well as nonroad engines and equipment in Port Fourchon in Louisiana because of impacts from Hurricane Ida. The limited waiver is effective immediately and runs through Sept. 15. The EPA said the waiver could be altered, terminated or extended as the conditions dictate. Ida slammed into Louisiana near the port as a Category 4 hurricane Aug. 29. The waiver will allow the sale and distribution of diesel that is above the 15 parts per million ultra-low sulfur diesel sulfur specifications at Port Fourchon. It will also waive regulations that would normally prohibit the sale of Emission Control Area marine fuel that normally must not be sold for use in nonroad equipment.
