The American Trucking Associations reports that its advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index declined 5.1% in March after falling 2.3% in February. In March, the index was 106.8 (2015=100), compared with 112.5 in February. February showed a preliminary 4.5% decline that was revised to minus 2.3% from ATA's March 23 news release.ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said the drop was surprising, considering the feedback he has received from fleets. "I certainly heard from many fleets that the end-ofquarter rush was good, but early March was soft," Costello said. "Truck freight volumes were also negatively impacted by supply chain issues from the lack of microchips and other inputs."
