CITGO Petroleum Corp. said in a March 25 notice to branded wholesalers that it will add a $5 fee per fraud chargeback on branded stations that fail to accept chip cards at the gas islands by April 17. The move is just the latest penalty enacted by oil brands to bring stations into compliance with the Europay Mastercard Visa technology standards for chip cards at the pump. According to Marathon Petroleum’s March 24 announcement to its branded wholesalers, the company said it would charge a similar $10-per-chargeback fee. Chevron and Shell also plan to levy penalties to bring stations in line.
