Legislation introduced in Congress would address the widening trucker shortage through an apprenticeship program allowing licensed commercial drivers younger than 21 to drive commercial vehicles across state lines. Currently, these drivers are prohibited from interstate commerce. Some 117 major businesses and trade associations – including the Energy Marketers of America, the National Tank Truck Carriers and the Service Station Dealers of America and Allied Trades – on Wednesday sent a letter to transportation leaders in Congress urging lawmakers pass the DRIVE-Safe Act.
