Driver shortage hits record in 2018

The shortage of qualified truck drivers shot up by nearly 20% in 2018 and could grow to be as large as 160,000 within a decade, a development that could have serious consequences for the U.S. economy, a national trucking group warned Wednesday. "The increase in the driver shortage should be a warning to carriers, shippers and policymakers," said Bob Costello, chief economist for the American Trucking Associations. "Over the past 15 years, we've watched the shortage rise and fall with economic trends, but it ballooned last year to the highest level we've seen to date."
