Even before coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was a concern, gas stations - especially the dispenser handles - have been a hot spot for germs, said Mike Zahajko, executive vice president of sales for CAF Outdoor Cleaning, based in Maple Valley, Wash., which serves the retail fuel industry. Zahajko cites a 2016 study that found 71% of gas pump handles sampled were highly contaminated with microbes and bacteria associated with illness. “Customers value safety and it’s a driving factor for why customers choose one location over another,” he said.
