Northrop and Martek develop new ecdis

On the navigation systems side, manufacturers and suppliers are introducing new electronic chart display and information systems (ecdis), products. Northrop Grumman subsidiary Sperry Marine has introduced an ecdis product for vessel retrofit projects. The VisionMaster FT Ecdis-E can be installed on ship bridges as a desktop unit or as a console, said Sperry Marine managing director Alan Dix. "This new design not only meets mandatory safety requirements, but brings new technology to the user." Ecdis-E operates on a commercial panel PC, which handles the functions of the monitor, PC unit and related subassemblies, and incorporates solid-state technology. This enables Sperry Marine to build panel PCs that use only microchips instead of the traditional mechanical or rotating active components. The system has standard ship sensor interfaces to connect with gyro compasses, speed logs and GPS receivers.
