摘要

One of the most eagerly awaited presentations in the session of the conference looking at advances in below-deck technology, including propulsion systems, focused on the results of the long-running FellowSHIP project. Tomas Tronstad, a principal engineer at classification society DNV GL and Bjorn Johann Vartdal, a project manager for the FellowSHIP project, provided delegates with details of the results from Phase 3 of the project (FellowSHIP 3), in which novel technologies have been installed and tested on the offshore supply vessel Viking Lady. The first two phases of the project demonstrated the introduction of a fuel cell into the power system of the ship. The current, third phase has demonstrated the introduction of a large-scale energy-storage system in the form of lithium-ion batteries. The battery was installed in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from the ship as well as improving its performance and safety. The vessel has been extensively monitored with sensors to quantify the effect of the introduction of battery storage onboard, and an extensive sea trial was conducted in 2014 to validate this effect.
