The reasoning behind Rene Kofod-Olsen's decision to order two subsea vessels from Vard Brattvaag in Norway is reflected in the price for the ships. At approximately US$115 million, the deal has been concluded at a time when, as Mr Kofod-Olsen put it, Topaz was able to minimise the cost of doing so. Speaking at the time that the deal was announced at the end of September 2015, Topaz Energy and Marine's CEO said that building in what is a challenging time for the industry had minimised costs, and choosing to do so now would mean that the vessels will be delivered when the market has rebalanced sufficiently to generate healthy demand. "These highly capable, energy-efficient and cost-effective vessels will benefit Topaz and our global clients immensely," he said. As he also noted, he has confidence in the growth of the subsea sector in the medium to long term.
