Marlink and Tampnet deliver wireless connectivity

Offshore support vessels in the North Sea can use a growing array of methods for communicating with other vessels, production platforms and shore staff. Further development of wireless technologies, based on the third and fourth-generation (3G/4G) mobile phone networks means there is an alternative to satellite-based communications. Norwegian companies Tampnet and Marlink will together deliver medium-range wireless communications to offshore support vessels (OSVs) after signing an agreement in May to open a network that is based on 4G wireless technology and that has fibre-optic cable connections to shore. The investment will involve the installation of communication nodes, including radio wave transmitters and receivers, on oil production platforms and vessels wanting to use the service. Marlink will integrate these services with its existing very small aperture terminal (VSAT) and mobile satellite solutions on different types of OSVs.
