摘要

East Africa has offered tantalising glimpses of potential riches offshore, but overall it remains underexplored. But what might happen next in this new hydrocarbon province? Some insight into this question was provided by Jeremy Berry, a global business development director at Gaffney, Cline & Associates. As he explained, deepwater sands offshore Mozambique and Tanzania have proved to be the most prolific new offshore 'basin' in the world in the past five years, with some 185 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources already having been discovered since the first well (Windjammer-1 in Area 1, offshore Mozambique) completed in March 2010. However, given the length of the coastline - about 4,000 miles (6,400km) from Somalia to South Africa - and the licences around surrounding islands such as Madagascar and Comoros, the deep water of the region remains largely unexplored. Only 85 wells have been drilled in the last five years, 85 per cent of which are within a 250-mile (400km) 'golden zone' running either side of the Tanzania-Mozambique border.
