Response vessels will act as 'front runners' after spill

2014 saw Petrobras issue a request for tenders for a new class of oil spill response vessel (OSRV) that would be capable of reacting at speed in the event of a release of oil on one of its oilfields. The winner of that tender was Compagnie Maritime Monegasque (CMM), but responding to the tender was a challenge, because Petrobras wanted the fast OSRVs in service particularly quickly. CMM's solution was an ingenious one -rather than commission the design and build of a new class of vessel, which would take time - it is collaborating with Damen Shipyards Group in The Netherlands, which builds vessels such as its innovative 'Sea Axe' type FCS5009 Axe Bow fast crew supply vessels for stock. CMM won the tender and will meet Petrobras' demanding time scale with modified versions of the FCS5009 vessels that have been adapted to act as OSRVs.
