L-band over leo satellites offers VSAT alternative

Indium has launched an L-band-based service for workboats and vessel operators that do not require VSAT. Iridium GO! can link to a network of low earth orbit (leo) satellites and provide a wireless hotspot on a vessel. This WiFi system can connect up to five mobile devices, such as Android or Apple phones or tablets, to the satellite network. It means a vessel's captain and crew have easy access to e-mail, text and voice services, said Iridium's director of global sales and operations Will Krauss. "This new product promises to be invaluable to the workboat and supply vessel market because it allows crew to continue to use their smartphones for the most popular and relevant applications, long after they have left the cellular connectivity of the port or harbour," he said. "These products are also good in locations where roaming charges are high or the crew do not have cellular prepaid options."
