New techniques can help meet decommissioning cost-cutting targets

More co-operation to share good practice, lessons learned and campaign management is needed to bring costs down by 35 per cent, experts told a recent Late Life and Decommissioning Special Interest Group event run by the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR) and Decom North Sea. Better contracting models also need to be developed for the industry. Operators must look for synergies with other energy industries, such as offshore wind, and share facilities for the greatest cost efficiencies, delegates at the event were told. New technology and different working practices to make the most expensive parts of decommissioning - including well plugging and abandonment (P&A) - less expensive, were also outlined by speakers at the event.
