The MMS announced 19 May that the agency will require all mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs) operating in the Gulf of Mexico to be outfitted with multiple global positioning system (GPS) transponders by 1 July, a month after the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. The agency will also request access to realtime GPS data so MMS and US Coast Guard officials can track rigs set adrift by a storm, said MMS regional director Lars Herbst in a conference call.
