Evaluating Communications Needs for Oil and Gas Platforms

The annual production of offshore oil and gas in the United States is valued at $25-$40 billion, according to the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. Globally, more than 2,000 new subsea production wells are forecasted to be drilled and completed in the period 2004 -2008. This activity is 71% higher than the previous five-year period. The overall cost of new wells, reported by Infield Systems Limited, is forecast to be over $31 billion with deepwater ( > 500m) wells alone costing approximately $14 billion.
