Greenpeace statement on the release of the 2008 SCRS report

The Scientific Committee of the: International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) has released its new assessment and recommendations for the management of the bluefin tuna fishery, which will be reviewed by ICCAT Member States in Marrakesh, Morocco in November. The Scientific Committee estimates that bluefin tuna catches were about 61,000 tonnes in the East Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea in 2007. This is to be compared to the legal quota of 29,500 tonnes and scientific advice that recommended a maximum of 15,000 tonnes. According to this new scientific report, "the Committee believes that unless fishing mortality rates are substantially reduced in the near future, the current management scheme will most probably lead to further reduction in spawning stock biomass with high risk of fisheries and stock collapse." The new scientific report released today can only add to Greenpeace's call for an immediate closure of the fishery.
