Tropical Deltas and Coastal Zones: Food Production, Communities and the Environment at the Land-Water Interface, CT

This book represents a selection of papers presented at the 2007 'Managing Critical Tropical Delta Systems' conference, which was convened to examine conflicts between agriculture, fisheries, aqua-culture and environmental issues in tropical deltas. The 32 papers reproduced in this 500 page book are organised into four sections comprising aquaculture and fisheries; agriculture; communities and governance and finally coastal and delta environments. Within these, there is much to interest readers concerned in particular with rice cultivation and productivity, which dominates the agriculture section and offers insights into strategies designed to maintain and enhance rice-based agriculture in deltaic environments. Aquaculture, principally in the form of shrimp farming, is also examined in relation to maintaining output under variable hydro-dynamic conditions, with case studies from Bangladesh, India, Thailand and Vietnam dominating both of these two sections.
