摘要

Restrictions on seafood coming from an area near the Dounreay nuclear site in northern Scotland will remain in place, following a Food Standards Agency review of the restriction zone. Restrictions have been in place since 1997 after fragments of irradiated nuclear fuel were discovered on the seabed near the site. A 2km restriction zone centred on the end of the site's liquid discharge pipeline was put in place and the removal of seafoods within this zone was banned under the Food Protection (Emergency Prohibition) (Dounreay Nuclear Establishment) Order 1997. The purpose of this order is to protect the public by ensuring that fish and shellfish that may have been contaminated by particles of irradiated nuclear fuel do not enter the food chain. The FSA says that with the restrictions in place, the risk to food safety remains extremely small.
