Two stonemasons developed silicosis, an incurable lung disease caused by inhalation of stone dust containing respirable crystalline silica, after their employer failed to protect them from exposure for fourteen years. York Crown Court heard that William Anelay Ltd allowed its employees to carry out dry stone cutting, a technique which creates a lot of dust, with no ventilation or use of protective clothing, resulting in them breathing in hazardous levels of silica.
