Poor day-to-day maintenance raises offshore concerns

A focus on preventing major offshore incidents is leading some companies to neglect the general maintenance of their oil and gas platforms, according to the report on a three-year maintenance inspection programme carried out by HSE's Offshore Division. The aim of the External Corrosion Management Inspection Project, which ran from July 2007 to March 2010, was to examine whether oil and gas platform operators have effective maintenance management systems in place for components such as walkways and stairways, piping and pipe supports, cable trays and fittings, bolts, flanges and valves used in both safety-critical and non-safety-critical applications.
