Strengthening EU air cargo security

Last October, viable explosive devices were discovered concealed in cargo shipments which had originated in Yemen. It was intended that they should be transferred to US-bound flights at airports in Germany and the UK. As a result, an EU high-level group on air cargo security has drawn up an action plan to strengthen security procedures across the European Union. The plan will allow those emergency security measures put in place by several EU Member States as soon as the devices were found to be replaced by a joint EU approach to address this new threat to civil aviation (ten EU airports are among the 20 top cargo hubs in the world).
