Miner crushed by faulty roof support

UK Coal and global machinery supplier, Joy Mining Machinery Ltd, have been fined a total of £250,000 following the death of a pit worker at Kellingley Colliery, West Yorkshire. Ian Cameron died in October 2009 as a result of injuries sustained when a powered roof support (PRS) lowered spontaneously, crushing him against debris that had accumulated within the walkway of the support. Leeds Crown Court heard that a solenoid valve within the PRS had become worn and defective, resulting in hydraulic fluid being able to pass under pressure through a valve and cause the PRS canopy to descend without the control button being operated.
