Heavy drinkers, non-drinkers and smokers all report higher levels of job strain than other workers, a consortium of European scientists has found.rnHowever, job strain over time does not seem to lead workers to take up or quit smoking or to start drinking excessively, according to two related studies.rnIn the study into alcohol and workplace stress - the largest of its kind to date - the researchers analysed data from 12 European studies including the UK's Whitehall II study to tease out possible associations between work strain and levels of alcohol consumption.
