MD fined for LOLER breach after crane fatality

A crane collapse led to the death of a construction worker after a steel column which the crane was moving when it toppled over hit him. Richard Mark Thornton was helping to construct a new floor on a warehouse in Liverpool when he died in March 2007. Liverpool Crown Court heard that the crane had been used to lift the six-tonne column when it was nearly 18 metres away, taking it well outside its safe lifting capacity for that distance. In addition, the crane had not been properly maintained and the external alarm could not be heard by those work-inq nearbv.
