The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has issued safety recommendations after a trawler owner drowned when his vessel capsized. The trawler, Solstice PH199, overturned in calm waters while hauling a heavy, high-value catch. The skipper and fellow crew member survived after clinging to the upturned hull for five-and-a-half-hours. The vessel's owner (the skipper's father) and his dog were trapped and drowned in the wheelhouse. A few days earlier, the vessel had been modified to operate as a stern trawler from scallop dredging and "did not have sufficient transverse stability to safely lift the contents of its net on board over the stern", found the MAIB.
