About half of UK swine flu admissions to hospital and 59% of inpatient deaths in the first wave of the influenza A (H_1N_1) pandemic were to otherwise healthy people, with no obvious risk factors, research published in the journal Thorax reveals. However, the over-representation of those with respiratory disease, very young children and pregnant women support the government's policy of prioritising vaccination for those in these groups.
