NOISE-INDUCED HEARING LOSS

The Supreme Court has upheld - by a majority decision-the appeals of employers in the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire knitting industries against their liability for noise-induced hearing loss1. In Baker v Quantum Clothing Croup Limited and others, the Supreme Court restored the findings of the High Court judge that a 1972 code of practice issued by the then Department of Employment constituted an acceptable standard for employers to adhere to until the terms of a draft European noise at work directive (86/188/EEC) came to be widely known.
