Professional services firm PwC estimates that absenteeism is costing UK businesses £32 billion a year, with workers taking almost double the number of sick days as their US counterparts.The estimate far exceeds that of previous reviews and yet PwC says the £32 billion figure is likely to be conservative as its research only takes into account the direct cost of absence and does not reflect potential replacement costs and lost productivity.
