More than 125 million people are still believed to be exposed to asbestos at work despite a ban on its use in Europe and many other parts of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) puts the number of deaths caused by asbestos-related lung disease at around 107,000 a year. Now, research carried out at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Kitakyushu, Japan, reveals just how many years of life are lost to mesothelioma and asbestosis - two key diseases caused by asbestos exposure.
