OCCUPATIONAL LINKS TO SUICIDE

Socioeconomic factors are a major determinant of high occupational suicide rates in Britain, according to a study published in Psychological Medicine. It also found that suicide rates have risen among those working in manual occupations, as compared with non-manual and professional occupations. The study looked at national occupational mortality statistics, and census-based occupational populations, and compared data from the late 1970s and early 1980s to data from 2001 to 2005. It included deaths from injuries and poisoning that were of 'undetermined intent', which it describes as equivalent to coroners' open verdicts.
