M&S EMPLOYEE SECURES COMPENSATION

A former employee of Marks and Spencer (M&S), who was exposed to asbestos while working for the retailer and who has since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, has received compensation for her ill health. Janice Allen worked in two M&S stores between 1978 and 1987, first in its flagship outlet near Marble Arch and then at its Uxbridge branch, and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2013. The retailer admitted negligently exposing Allen to asbestos and, prior to the case starting at the High Court on 25 June, agreed to pay her a significant undisclosed sum. M&S was previously fined £1 million and ordered to pay costs of £600,000 in 2011 for putting members of the public, staff and construction workers at risk of exposure to asbestos-containing materials during the refurbishment of a store in Reading1. The retailer had employed contractors who removed asbestos present in ceiling tiles and elsewhere during the work at the store in Reading and also at Bournemouth.Three contractors were also fined.
