Getting Started in DIY Modular Synthesis

In Part 1 of this series, we focused on the essential elements of Eurorack case and power supply specifications. Now that you have the information you need to create your own case, we can start talking about the basics of modular synthesis and what you need to actually make some sound. In this installment, we're going to look at five synthesis building blocks that make up a typical modular 'voice.' We're even going to build the first one: the VCO, or Voltage-Controlled Oscillator. In Part 3 (which will appear in the following issue), we'll provide instructions on how to build the remaining four modules. Let's dig in!
