The National Nuclear Security Administration has dismantled three times as many nuclear weapons as it had planned this year, significantly ramping up its efforts to decrease the size of its nuclear stockpile. Without releasing specific numbers, the agency announced last week an 146 percent increase in nuclear weapons dismantlements during Fiscal Year 2007, well above its goal to increase dismantlements by 49 percent.
