FLAT FUNDING FOR NNSA EXPECTED IN FY 2009 BUDGET REQUEST

The President is expected to seek relatively flat funding for the National Nuclear Security Administration-roughly $9.6 billion-when the Fiscal Year 2009 budget request is submitted to Congress Feb. 4. But it remains unclear how the request will handle several controversial NNSA programs, including the Reliable Replacement Warhead initiative. Funding for the program was zeroed out in the FY2008 omnibus appropriations act, though NNSA officials have continued to tout the program's benefits in the face of Congressional opposition.
