LONGTIME LUGAR AIDE NAMED HEAD OF DEFENSE THREAT REDUCTION AGENCY

Kenneth Myers, a longtime staffer to Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), has been appointed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates as the Director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. DTRA's primary mission is to safeguard the country from weapons of mass destruction threats-nuclear, radiological, chemical, biological and high explosives-and the agency specifically implements DoD's Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction program, one of Lugar's signature initiatives. Myers has worked as Lugar's primary adviser on the Nunn-Lugar CTR program both in his capacity as the senior professional staff member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee since 2003, and before that on Lugar's personal staff for nine years.
