摘要

The top U.S. negotiator on a replacement to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia last week voiced optimism that a follow-on treaty could be brokered over the next few months, but she vowed to not let the looming deadline force a less-than-desirable deal. "If things aren't going well, you can't rush to the finish just to get something done," Assistant Secretary of State for Verification and Compliance Rose Gottemoeller said April 7 at the Carnegie International Nonproliferation Conference in Washington, D.C. "And I want to make it clear that from the perspective of the United States, we will do what we have to do to get this negotiation done, but as Secretary [of State Hillary] Clinton said when she went before Congress for her own hearing, she said, if necessary, we will look for ways to find more time for the negotiators."
