NNSA SPEEDING UP EFFORT TO REPLACE W88 ARMING, FUZING AND FIRING SYSTEM

The National Nuclear Security Administration is accelerat-ing efforts to replace the arming, fuzing and firing system on the W88 nuclear warhead and is planning to spend $400 million over the next five years looking at options for the key warhead component. The NNSA didn't initially request Fiscal Year 2011 funds to begin the study, but NW&M Monitor has learned that the agency plans to reprogram at least $4 million to begin the work at Sandia National Laboratories, the NNSA laboratory that is in charge of designing the AF&F systems. The systems are produced at the agency's Kansas City Plant.
