A steady decline of nuclear safety violations issued by the Department of Energy in recent years has led to concerns over how DOE carries out safety oversight, according to Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board Chairman Peter Winokur. The number of nuclear safety violations issued by DOE per year has dropped by more than 67 percent since 2006, with no nuclear safety enforcement actions taken last year, Winokur said in remarks at a DOE-hosted safety workshop held earlier this month. "While we would like to believe that this trend represents a substantive improvement in the nuclear safety posture, this is not consistent with the Board's perception of the state of nuclear safety within DOE," he said.
