HOUSE PANEL ENDORSES BUDGET UPLIFT FOR NNSA WEAPONS PROGRAM

A House authorizing panel last week sent a clear signal of support for the Administration's planned Fiscal Year 2011 budget for the National Nuclear Security Administration's weapons program, matching the President's $7.01 billion request and shifting around some money to support work at the agency's two main nuclear production sites. The Administration requested a $624 million increase for the agency's weapons program as part of a balanced approach to maintaining the weapons stockpile and complex while simultaneously cutting the size of the arsenal and pushing to strengthen the nonproliferation regime, and the House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee left the request largely intact as it reported out its version of the FY2011 Defense Authorization Act May 12.
