BROMBERG RETIRING AS HEAD OF NNSA OFFICE OF FISSILE MAT. DISPOSITION

Ken Bromberg, who has headed up the National Nuclear Security Administration's Office of Fissile Materials Disposition for the last four years, is retiring at the beginning of next month. Bromberg announced earlier this month that he would leave his post Oct. 3, though his successor has not been named. Bromberg, a longtime fixture in the Office of Fissile Materials Disposition, became the Assistant Deputy Administrator for Fissile Materials Disposition in 2007 and oversaw the agency's uranium and plutonium disposition efforts during a pivotal time for the program. Notably, Bromberg headed up the program as construction began on the $4.86 billion Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility being built at the Savannah River Site, and he's dealt with a handful of issues involving the program—from problems finding buyers for the MOX fuel to altered approaches to building a Pit Disassembly and Conversion Facility that will eventually provide the feedstock for the MOX facility.
