KYL BLASTS ADMINISTRATION AFTER 'NEW START' WARHEAD DATA RELEASED

Sen. Jon Kyi (R-Ariz.) is no fan of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia, and the first release of treaty data from the U.S. and Russia last week certainly hasn't helped change his opinion. In a speech on the Senate floor this week, Kyi criticized the Administration for agreeing to a 1,550 cap on strategic deployed warheads that according to figures released by the State Department Russia has already met, calling the treaty "perhaps the first bilateral treaty that resulted in U.S. unilateral reductions in nuclear forces." Russia had 1,537 strategic deployed warheads when the treaty went into force on Feb. 5, according to the data, while the U.S. had 1,800 warheads. With the Administration planning another round of arms control talks with Russia, he said he was concerned that the U.S. would again concede too much to Moscow. "I worry that the next round may also be a unilateral round where the United States makes all of the concessions, as occurred under the New START Treaty," said Kyi, who did not vote for the treaty when it was ratified by the Senate in December.
