ON THIRD TRY, KIEWIT AWARDED HIGH EXPLOSIVE PRESSING FACILITY CONTRACT

Kiewit Building Group officials believed they were close to being awarded a contract to build the High Explosive Pressing Facility when the project was put on hold in 2009, but after two-year delay and another contract competition, the Omaha, Neb.-based company was awarded a $65.2 million contract to build the Pantex Plant facility this week. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, which is managing the construction of the facility for the National Nuclear Security Administration, nine bids were received for the project, which will replace Pantex's aging high explosive pressing operations. Ray Hallquist, a project executive with Kiewit, said construction is scheduled to start this summer, and the Army Corps of Engineers said in an announcement about the contract award this week that the facility is estimated to be completed Dec. 1,2013. That's earlier than the schedule laid out in the project's baseline, according to Pantex Site Office spokeswoman Brenda Finley, who said the new facility is expected to be completed in January of 2015 and operational no later than September 2016.
