House appropriators are looking to rescind more than a billion dollars associated with the privatization of USEC still remaining. The House version of the Fiscal Year 2015 Energy and Water Appropriations bill, reported out of subcommittee this week, would rescind the roughly $1.6 billion in the United States Enrichment Corporation Fund, a fund set up during the privatization of USEC in the 1990s to cover costs associated with privatization. The funds had been available to DOE to pay for USEC-related costs without the need of Congressional action. Appropriators are aiming to prevent DOE from using those funds to pay for new projects without gaining approval from lawmakers. Currently USEC’s American Centrifuge project is under a new 18-month DOE-funded management by Oak Ridge National Laboratory under a contract that began in May, though DOE has not requested additional funds for the program in Fiscal Year 2015.
